Dear Families



               The Racial Solidarity Committee for the South Seattle Deanery is made up of staff and volunteers from the parishes in central, south, and west Seattle whose mission is “We will work with the Catholic community of South Seattle Deanery to eradicate the sin of racism through awareness, education, and action.” For the past couple years, we have held a vigil on the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd (May 25). This year, we are broadening the scope a bit and creating a week of Racial Solidarity with additional resources for parishes.

               Starting today, we enter a week of racial solidarity and racism awareness sponsored by the Racial Solidarity Committee of the South Seattle Deanery of parishes, of which we are a part. Thursday marks the third anniversary of the brutal murder of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis. But even before that, there were countless instances of racial injustice and brutality in the history of our nation -- and our community -- and they continue today.

               Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." He didn't say all White nations or all Black nations; not all Asian nations or all South American nations. Jesus clearly intended His words, and His salvation, for people of all nations, no matter race or color.

               As Catholics, we can make a strong and visible stand against what Pope Francis and the U.S. Bishops have called "the sin of racism." Take some time this week to reflect and pray about incidents of racism you have seen or experienced. On Tuesday evening join in a special deanery-wide racial solidarity service at 6pm. It will be held at St. Edward parish at 4212 South Mead Street, just west of Rainier Avenue South in Columbia City. You can find details in the bulletin.

               As we prepare for Pentecost, may the Holy Spirit help us purge the scourge of racism from our church, our community, and our lives, so that we might know the great joy of encountering and understanding all people as our equals.
